Perhaps shying away from the traditionality of a black tie event, more and more hosts are calling for a ‘black tie optional’ dress code. An ambiguous dress code at best, guys need to find the perfect balance between a business suit and a tuxedo. A dark suit with a conservative tie or bow tie and Oxford or Derby lace-ups will be your best bet. However, if you wear it four or five times, which you will do, you’ll be ahead. You also won’t have to leech off your friends or wear a 100% polyester outfit that the mates you tried to borrow off will inevitably rubbish you about. It’s suggested that the first iteration of the black tie dress code we know today, dates back to the Edwardian era.

Social, depending on the occasion and as opposed to business, can mean long for women, but checking with the hostess/sponsor seems imperative. Personally I’ve usually been warned when long is requested or required – and wouldn’t be caught dead in long for business. While this is a standard black-tie look , women actually have a lot of freedom to express themselves when choosing a black-tie gown. You can wear any color, any cut, and any style – provided that your look is both event-appropriate and totally glamorous. “The design of the invite, as well as the event details, will give clues which you should consider when deciding on your look,” explains Padilla. Are they more conservative or more laid back and casual?

Are people really seeing lots of floor length gowns at black tie events? Maybe it’s regional (although Kat’s also in NYC) but I rarely see actual floor length dresses anymore on anyone in their 20s and 30s. This wedding on Sunday is black tie, and I just realized! (Not mentioned on website. Only on the invitation. I missed it!) Unlike many of the people in my program, I am very broke. Instead of using rent the runway and throwing 100 bucks at an evening, I would prefer to have a dress for all such future events. Any suggestions specific to Chicago for a reasonably priced black tie dress sized 8-10.

I think most people do not understand Goodwill. I have found many things at Goodwill from clothes to my kitchen table which I just love but if it wasn’t for blogs like yours and others I would have never stepped in one. I think getting the word out and changing people minds of what they think Goodwill is will be the key.

I don’t like “my supervising partner,” since that puts too much emphasis on your need for supervision. Yep, I had Kat’s experience with being one of the only women in a short dress at my first. Agree with Kat on the nice shoes and accessories, and DEFINITELY also the advice on asking a more senior coworker whether dresses are long or short. Honestly, I think the dresses that are well-loved are also well-worn. I stopped by the Chicago store recently to try on a dress that I’ll end up renting as a bridesmaid dress and I’m so glad I did.

All of these allow me to make the most of our hard earned money. I love your dresses and totally agree with finding them second hand. Having a young girl in college, I know formal wear is out of sight expensive. We have always found clearance racks and sales. When she comes home from college, we hit the local Goodwill.

I’ve included formal gowns that would work for galas, formal events, balls, new years parties and super glam date nights. This tuxedo for men's black-tie attire will show the happy couple you really understood the assignment. The single-breasted style is completed with notch lapels, single button fastening and chest and side pockets.

I looked every bit as elegant as my family and my dresses were only a fraction of what they paid. You can find things in thrifts stores that aren’t available anywhere else. You aren’t limited to the trends set by designers in LA, NY and Paris. Vintage, handmade, classic, or retro styles … you can find it all. Not only is it a frugal choice for you, but it helps the world as a whole. Your money goes to support others, whether it be a charity or to help those in need of job skills and employment.

Depending on your timeline, you can always wait for stock to flip. I bought the gown for my law formal in end of Jan/Feb right before grad season really started for about $160 for a dress that should have been $300-$400. I usually have equal luck in July or August for more cocktail styles. If you're headed to a summer or destination wedding, this Reformation dress is a no-brainer. Dressy enough to adhere to a black-tie dress code and playful enough to complement a destination wedding venue–this dress is the best of both worlds.
